Israel Passes Two Laws Threatening U.N. Aid Agency in Gaza

Israel passed two laws on Monday that could jeopardize the operations of the main U.N. aid agency in Gaza by forbidding it from working on Israeli territory and severing diplomatic ties with it. The laws, sparking concerns from international allies, could impact aid distribution amidst the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The first law prohibits the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, from conducting any activities within Israel, while the second law severs diplomatic relations with the agency. This move follows allegations of UNRWA staff involvement in Hamas attacks, leading to international donors cutting funding.

The laws risk disrupting aid distribution in Gaza, where over 1.9 million Palestinians are displaced, facing shortages of essential resources. The U.N. Secretary-General expressed alarm over the laws’ potential impact, and U.S. allies also condemned the legislation.

With the laws set to take effect in 60 to 90 days, concerns arise about the ability to provide aid to civilians in Gaza. The developments come amidst escalating violence in the region, with Israeli forces conducting raids on hospitals in Gaza, exacerbating an already dire situation.
